The Everest region and Khumbu Valley in the northern part of Nepal are known for the beautiful harmony of nature and culture in the shadows of the Himalayas. And, that is precisely what trekkers get to experience on the Everest three Pass Trek. The trek traces its route via three of the highest passes in the region; Kongma La (5535m), Cho La (5420m), and Renjo La (5360m). Also known as the Everest Three Passes Trek, trekkers can relish the Himalayan vistas and the warm Sherpa culture and hospitality.
Mt. Everest or Sagarmatha is the tallest mountain in the world, and its height has naturally brought a great deal of fame to the Everest region. So, the cultural heritage and natural attractions around the mountain are a massive part of the treks, expeditions, and other trips. The Everest High Passes Trek is a similar trek highlighting the majesty of the mountain passes in the Khumbu valley for trekkers. The trip starts with a thrilling flight to Lukla and crosses the Kongma La Pass, and Cho La Pass, followed by the Renjo La Pass.
The trail continues from Lukla heads north alongside the serene Dudh Koshi River and reaches Namche follow the island peak base camp trail via Tengboche and Dingboche to reach Chhukung. After crossing the Kongma La Pass (5535m), the trail takes you to the Everest Base Camp. Next, you enjoy the magical sunrise from Kala Patthar and head west to cross Cho La Pass (5420m). Further, you trek to Gokyo Valley and ascend Renjo La Pass (5360m). The final part of the trek takes you back to Lukla and ends your adventure in the Himalayas realm.
Kongma La (5,535m): Kongma La pass is located in Lobuche village (west) and Chukung village (east) but the west side of the route is steeper than the eastern side. The entire pass route is marked by waving prayer flags between the mountains. It takes 5-6 hours to cross the pass then after you left from Chukung. From the pass, you’ll be rewarded with an incredibly panoramic mountains view of the lakes and glacial landscapes with the 5th tallest mount Makalu, Ama-Dablam, and Lobuche peak with the entire Everest region of peaks.
Cho La (5,380m): These passes need to cross the Cho La Glacier, which will likely be holding snow and ice. In a good weather condition, you can cross the stove without any expert equipment, but warm clothing is essential. It is most frequently crossed by many trekkers in the Everest Region. The western side of the pass is much steeper than the eastern side, but the pass can be made on sides both sides via Dzongla (east side) or Dragnag (west side).
Renjo La (5,388m): Renjo la pass is considered to be the easiest pass among the three passes. It is connected with the Gokyo Lakes, where the eye-popping vista awaits. If the sky is clear, we can see the rooftops of Gokyo glinting distantly on the shore of the lake beneath the grey smear of the Ngo-Zompa glacier and the sawtooth peaks of Everest, Lhotse, Chola-tse and Tabuche. Renjo la pass can do after or before crossing Kongma-la and Cho-la.
Experience Required
Everest Three Pass trek is one of the most challenging treks in the Everest region and offers one of the most rewarding and truly special experiences trekking. As this route takes you remote high passes, over 5000m from sea level, trekkers must have experience walking steep, boulder-strewn paths where the use of hands is required to scramble upwards over the rocky paths. Even, sometimes trekkers require to use crampons on Chola pass if snow. Thus, previous trekking experience to 4000m will be ideal for this trek.
