Dubbed the highest trekking peak in Nepal- Mera Peak (6476m) presents a unique challenge in the Himalayas. This peak climbing explores the southern part of the Everest region and the Makalu region. The daunting task of scaling the peak is coupled with the remarkable natural riches of Makalu Barun National Park. Moreover, the climb also mixes captivating sceneries with the Himalayan terrain on the way to the summit.
Mera Peak is the first choice for those who are looking to have their first experience in the Himalayas of Nepal. Rising to 6476 above sea level this peak is the first step for climbers to build 7000m+ more serious mountaineering objectives. Similarly, Mera Peak is a technically and mentally more achievable peak without much struggle compared to other 6000m peaks in Nepal. Like most trips in the Everest region, the journey to Mera Peak also begins with a flight to Lukla.
Starting from Lukla, you follow the Dudh Koshi River downstream to Panggom. Further, you reach Kothe and continue to Thangnak. As you enjoy the views of the Charpate Himal range, the trail takes you to the desolate region of Makalu Barun National Park at Khare. Then, you acclimatize to the altitude before joining the trail to High Camp. The summit of Mera Peak offers plenty of challenges as you savour the views of the nearby Himalayas. The summit, however, offers a breath-taking panorama of five of the highest mountains in the world, namely, Mt. Everest (8848m), Kanchenjunga (8586m), Lhotse (8516m), Makalu (8481m), and Cho Oyu (8201m). After the successful climb, you’ll head back to Lukla via a different route across Zatrwa La Pass (4610m). In total, the Mera peak takes 18-20 days.
Experience Required
Joining to climb Mera peak, climbers have a level of physical fitness and a moderate level of technical climbing, likewise, prior 3000 to 4000m climbing experience and high-altitude snow walking experience with crampons is highly recommended for this peak. Similarly, climbers must maintain a steady pace on the trip while acclimatizing to the altitude.
